I’m Hitomi Kimura, a Japanese surface pattern designer. Pattern & Craft is my design and craft blog where I share things I make. My work is inspired by my love of colour, sophisticated designs, mid-century modern, craftsmanship and Japan.
I always loved playing with colour. With a background in fine art (my BFA is in painting), I began my career in the printing industry in Japan. My interest in surface pattern design began when I returned to Japan in 2005 from England, where I worked for a Japanese publisher for a few years. To pursue my passion for colour and pattern, I started printing my designs on fabric in my home studio and making and selling handmade products in 2007 under the label Kalla. Then I started this blog in 2008 to share my design process and interests. And since 2011, I’ve been working as a surface pattern designer and collaborated with various companies to create beautiful products.
In 2021, I transitioned my blog and changed its name to focus more on crafts as a way to share my love for making things with my hands. I want to share my love for colour, patterns, design process, creative ideas and updates about my daily life. And I hope you will find inspiration here for your craft projects, too.
I would love to hear from you!
